Who is our hope, joy, or prize that we can brag about in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Isn't it you? You are our glory and joy!
 — Paul, 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20, GOD’S WORD Translation

Dear Saints:

As I pondered the topic for my January message, the traditional song Auld Lang Syne came to mind. Why, I don’t know. I guess because, as I write this, the New Year is close at hand. As I further pondered this song, I realized that I didn’t have a clue what it meant. I looked around for my Old Scottish for Dummies manual, but couldn’t locate it, so I decided to do a quick Google search, and what you see below are the results: a version of Auld Lang Syne—with definitions! From now on you (and I) will be able to sing this New Year’s classic, not only with gusto—but with understanding that will dazzle your family and friends! So then, lads and lassies, give it a shot, would ye? And a 1, and a 2 ...

AULD LANG SYNE
Words adapted from a traditional song
by Rabbie Burns (1759-96)

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!

2. And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp,
    And surely I'll be mine,
And we'll tak a cup o kindness yet,
    For auld lang syne!

3. We twa hae run about the braes,
    And pou'd the gowans fine,
    But we've wander'd monie a weary fit,
    Sin auld lang syne.

4. We twa hae paidl'd in the burn
    Frae morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
    Sin auld lang syne.

5. And there's a hand my trusty fiere,
    And gie's a hand o thine,
    And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught,
    For auld lang syne.
