Dear
Saints:
Recently
I discovered a new musical artist. Her name is Jill Phillips. She
and her husband, Andy Gullahorn (also a singer/songwriter), live in
Nashville, Tennessee, and are members of an Anglican church
thereChurch of the Redeemer. She has recorded several albums,
but one of my favorite cuts is a traditional hymn from her 2005 CD
entitled Kingdom Come. It's nothing but her wonderful voice
and a guitar.
When
I first heard her rendition of What Wondrous Love Is This
tears came to my eyes as I thought about the great love our
incomparable God has for us, and I was reminded of Paul's words from
his letter to the church at Rome when he wrote, "For I am sure
that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things
present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor
anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the
love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38-39, English
Standard Version).
I
write this article only a few days before leaving for Lutherock with
the Confirmation Class. Since I'm sure you believe, as I do, that our
youth are a very important part of our present and future here at St.
Matthew, I'm encouraging you to take this month of August to
emphasize in your prayers our young people and the programs we've
designed for them at our church. I've included below the words to
this hymn as a reflective tool you may wish to use in this endeavor.
Try reciting, singing, or simply listening to it (if you have a
recording) as you begin or end your prayers. And, may we all come to
a fuller knowledge of the incredible depth of God's love, grace,
forgiveness, and redemption given to us in Jesus!
What
Wondrous Love Is This
What
wondrous love is this O my soul O my soul
What
wondrous love is this O my soul
What
wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss
To
bear the dreadful curse for my soul for my soul
To
bear the dreadful curse for my soul
When
I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down
When
I was sinking down, sinking down
When
I was sinking down beneath Gods righteous frown
Christ
laid aside His crown for my soul for my soul
Christ
laid aside His crown for my soul
To
God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing
To
God and to the Lamb I will sing
To
God and to the Lamb who is the great I Am
While
millions join the theme I will sing
And
when from death Im free Ill sing on Ill sing on
And
when from death Im free Ill sing on
And
when from death Im free Ill sing and joyful be
And
through eternity Ill sing on, Ill sing on
And
through eternity Ill sing on
Grace
and peace,
Pastor
